However, in recent years, the area of pine plantations has decreased from 180,270 hectares in 2018 to 126,615 hectares in 2024, largely due to the conversion of land to eucalyptus cultivation, which has shorter cycles and lower production costs. Currently, the country exports around 50% of its production of unprocessed pine logs, mainly to markets such as China and India. In order to improve the sector’s competitiveness, the urgency of introducing solutions that allow for more competitive local industrialization, thus reducing dependence on the export of unprocessed logs, was raised. These solutions include product diversification, taking advantage of the processing capacity of industries in the north and northeast of the country.

Market for long fiber and high value-added products

Long pine fiber, prized for its strength, flexibility and absorbency, is essential for the production of packaging cartons, tissue paper and hygiene products, sectors that are experiencing growth worldwide. Russia’s exit from the market as a supplier has generated an increase in demand and prices, opening up new opportunities for Uruguayan production in key markets such as Asia and Latin America. Joao Cordeiro highlighted opportunities in advanced biofuels and biochemicals derived from pine, such as green hydrogen and e-methanol, which, in addition to reducing carbon emissions, offer a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. These innovations position Uruguayan pine in a strategic role for the development of a circular bioeconomy.

Development and innovation projects in Uruguay

Also presented were projects under development that seek to increase the added value of pine production in Uruguay. One of these is the first CLT panel factory in the country, ARBOREAL, which is dedicated to producing wood for sustainable construction.

Another relevant project is the BRASPINE plant, a Brazilian company that plans to start operations in Uruguay in 2026, producing biomass moldings and pellets and generating 500 direct jobs.

Potential and sustainability for the future of pine in Uruguay

The conference highlighted the role of pine in the creation of a sustainable and competitive timber industry in Uruguay, with opportunities in construction, biofuels, biochemicals and sustainable textile fibers. To maximize this potential, the need to implement public policies that promote new plantations, encourage industrialization and improve efficiency in the production of by-products was highlighted. The timber forestry sector could generate jobs and development in different regions, consolidating Uruguay as a benchmark in the sustainable forestry industry and the circular bioeconomy.

Presentations

The challenge of pine in Uruguay
Claudio Ortolan – Klabin SA

The future of long fiber pulps
João Cordeiro- Afry Management Consulting

From nature to fabric: The rise of man-made cellulosic fibres
Łucja Wanicka – Afry Management Consulting

Summary of the event

The event “Hablamos de Pino”, held on September 26, 2024 in Montevideo and organized by the Centro Tecnológico Forestal Maderero (CTFM), the Academia Nacional de Ingeniería de Uruguay (ANIU) and the Instituto Nacional de Investigación Agropecuaria (INIA), brought together national and international experts to discuss the present and future of pine timber in Uruguay.

[102,80

post-11576","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-2024-en-2","category-news
["GET
