Social and Economic Warnings and Trends,” which took place on November 6, Dr. Grünberg noted that “historically, it has been quite rare for a task to be completely automated and for a profession to disappear altogether.”

However, although in previous industrial revolutions the balance was always positive, “how worried do we have to be now?” questioned the academic, who is rector of ORT Uruguay University.

New threats

“We came from a stage where the demand for IT jobs, for example, was always higher than the supply. And yet, now, in the last few months we are finding that generative artificial intelligences can produce on average 50% of the code automatically,” he said.

According to Dr. Grünberg, “there is a threat of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it is true, but not because there will be a lack of jobs (because there will not be a lack of jobs)”.

“The threat is the skills shortage, not the jobs shortage. The main challenge for our societies will be to overcome the skills gap, the gap between people’s current skills and those required to fill new jobs,” he said.

“If we were able to reconceptualize work in terms of problems to be solved, and this was the value to be added (instead of a sequence of tasks), it would be ideal for engineers. In this view, it’s different. Artificial intelligences and humans can complement each other in terms of redefining our comparative advantages,” said Grünberg.

The colloquium

The International Virtual Colloquium was attended by academicians from the Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain and the Academy of Engineering of Mexico, the president of the Academy of Engineering of Argentina, academicians from the academies of engineering of the United States, Uruguay and Korea, as well as the president of the South American Union of Associations of Engineers, the president of the Committee of Dissemination and Communication of the Institute of Engineering of Spain, and the president of the Academy of Mining Music of Mexico.

In total, 17 speakers shared their knowledge and experiences on November 6, 7 and 8, for about four hours each day.

Unsuspected opportunities

“Today humanity faces challenges that will be solved by engineering, by science and technology, and how engineering applies them to achieving the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations for the 2030 and 2050 agendas will largely determine the future of humanity,” said Dr. Mónica Barrera Rivera in her opening speech.

“Professionals and governors who are willing to adapt to change will have unsuspected opportunities in an ever-changing labor market and economic, social and political environment,” he said.

“We cannot remain mere spectators in this Fourth Industrial Revolution,” he added.

Day of November 6, 2023

Day of November 7, 2023

Within the framework of the International Virtual Colloquium, organized by the Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain and the Academy of Engineering of Mexico, the Dr. Jorge Grünbergrepresenting the National Academy of Engineering of Uruguay (ANIU) reflected on the possible impacts of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) on future engineering jobs.

[89,80

post-11403","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-anio-ing-2023","category-news
["GET
